-Jan 29 2003 i tried everything and it came down to the USP compact and the Sig 229. i chose the H&K and have not regretted it. its accurate, especially considering its small barrel length. i was told by a gunsmith to dry fire the gun to smooth out the trigger. after a lot of that, the firing pin broke in half durring a range session. H&K fixed it for free and very quickly. they have reportedly improved the quality of the metal for the firing pin. by the way, the gunsmith is now out of business. (surprise?) i did take several trips to the range to restore my confidence in the gun as it is my everyday carry weapon. i had Trijicon night sights installed and smoothed out the sharp edges on the grip. and like a previous poster, i carry it in a Blade-Tech IWB holster that fit the gun and me perfectly.
as stated before, it will take some time to get used to shooting a lighter weight pistol in a hotter caliber. after a lot of practice, one can become proficient with it just like any other firearm.
the only failure to feed i ever had was due to a Cor-Bon bullet that had a bent rim and the bullet loaded crooked. not the guns fault.
the combination safety/decocker is the perfect setup in my opinion (and a main reason i chose it over the Sig)as well as the ambidextrous magazine release that is virtually impossible to activate accidentally like many of the push button releases found on other guns. the gun is easy to disassemble and the barrel is easy to clean clean thanks to the polygonal rifling.
the gun is not much on form, being one of the uglier guns out there, but its function is fatanstic. it looks, functions and feels like a serious fighting/self defense tool. it is ambiguous about ammo, feeding everything out there that i have tried. point of impact changes very slightly with bullet weight though.
in my opinion, one of the best choices for personal defense on the market. Details..

-4/12/2002 Like the original poster, I was comfortable with the full-sized .45 pistols, and tried out a USP-40 compact for concealed carry.
Just like the original poster, I had extreme difficulty controlling the USP40C, and didn't have anything resembling a group... even when I scooted it to 12'.
Ergonomically, the USP 40C is excellent, but controlling it is a challenge, between a light polymer frame and the powerful .40 round, it's a "expert's gun", and not something I was confident I could use well in a life-and-death situation.

-2/10/2002 they say a gun is only great if it shoots great in the hand of its owner. let me tell you this. i really never wanted a gun as much as my usp40 compact with stainless upper. i waited six weeks to get it in, and paid out the aXX to get it. it felt so right in my hands. it looked mean too. i had shot the 45 cal in this model, and was very accurate with no malfunctions. i have owned and shot many pistols and i can say with much anguish, that this gun is not for me. it looks, and feels great. it will load and eject any ammunition flawlessly. but in a emergency situation, i couldnt hit squat with this pistol. im not a championship marksman, but i do shoot in the upper 10% of most shooters at my local range. this gun just does not work good in my hands. not the guns fault or mine for that matter. we just didnt work good together. Im happy to say i sold it for what i paid for it Details..

-Jan 31 2002 I've owned glocks, 1911s and a beretta 92fs for some time. I just bought the HK .40 compact for a new carry pistol and I love it!!! Went out the day I bought it and ran 500 rounds through it without a single problem. It shoots perfect, no flyers more than 3-4" off at 25 yds. It feels great in my blade-tech IWB holster, not too light, best grip I've got! I never liked the way glocks feel or look, but they shoot allright. This gun combines it all in a beautiful package. BUY ONE OF THESE, YOU'LL NEVER REGRET IT!!! Details..
