The HK USP .40 is an excellent range gun overall. If you can get used to the trigger, that is. The conventional HK trigger system on the USPs is the worst one of the polymer-framed firearms to date out of the Big Four (i.e. Glock, HK, Sig, Beretta).
The trigger pull itself in DA is probably something like 9 pounds (never having measured it and not feeling like looking their site up, that's what I'm going with). It's not as heavy as a conventional revolver, but not as light as the SA mode, either. What it is, however, is mushy. It's like pulling the trigger through mashed potatoes, and after the gun has fired, again, there's travel through mashed potatoes.

I have carried a variety of pistols on duty, to include s&w 5906, rugerp90, glock 21, etc. I've shot several others, like beretta 92, glock 19, sig 229 and 239. None of these suited me like the USP 45. I have shot my best scores with this gun. As far as reliability goes, this gun will only jam if you put inferior ammo in it (ie wolf laquer-coated crap). As far as people making comments about renting or borrowing a usp and having a bad experience, I can only tell you that that kind of gun is rarely taken care of, cleaned properly, etc. Besides, you never know what other clod shot the gun before you did. I have compared my experiences with this gun with other professionals. If you don't like the price, get a glock. But if you want something that will perform at least as well as a glock, an
