  • →HK Accuracy - USP/USP Tactical/MK23?
    2007-02-05 19:35:38
Has anyone fired any or all three of these pistols and have an opinion on their accuracy? I'm looking to get one and I know the MK 23 is all match grade, but for the price of the pistol for mainly killing paper targets, are the other two 'good enough'? I like the feel of the MK23 even though its larger, but a USP fits nice too. Can you shoot relatively tight groups with either of the two lesser models. And, how do they compare to a P229? I have shot one of those and did well, even though it felt 'tall', but I just like the HK's.

Own a usp 40 (full size) and have benn happy with it' s proformance. at 25 yard it can easily shoot under 3 1/2 inches with out being rested in sand bags. The 45 expert has a O-ring like the MK23 that is reported to improve groups as it tightens up the barrel to slide fit. but Ive never fired any other usp to know one way or another.

With further investigation (go to the H&K site) you will find that the USP and the SOCOM 23 are entirely different animals. A USP Tactical wil probably cost you between $750-$1100, depending upon bells&whistles, whereas the SOCOM 23, if you can FIND one, will set you back around $2500 with or without the suppressor! I bought a .45 ACP USP Tactical used about 5 years ago out of a pawn shop for $550 w/3 mags. Like most believable "experts" in the trade, I believe this is the FINEST, most reliable semi-auto on the market, for the money. I have run over 1000 rounds of all types, factory and reloads, through mine in hot & cold, even blowing sand desert conditions with 0-0-0! malfunctions! For possible price quotes and availability, go to www.gunbroker.com & run search for H&K USP.
  • →.40 S&W or 9mm? +'s and -'s of each in your opinion. I'm looking at an HK USP Tactical.?

Got a Kimber CDP in .45 ACP, I'll never sell it. Just looking for something a bit different. Thanks for the insightful answer.

Well, you are looking at an excellent gun. Congrats for having good taste, now get 9mm out of your mind! Of course, the most important factor when considering a gun for protection, not enough stopping power. People can say all they want about 9's for self defense, but the problem is that they cannot be relied upon to effectively and immediately stop a life threatening situation without oodles of training. The 9mm was the reason the "double-tap" was conceived. On the bonus side a 9mm is cheap to shoot. They are great range guns. From steel, soda, to silhouette 9's are a blast, but I recommend .45 ACP or .40 S&W at the least for self defense. Good recommendation Doc. the .357 Sig sounds like a good fit for this man. Have a good ' un.
  • →What is the best combat/tactical pistol?
    2008-04-03 15:50:10
I'm looking for a .45 that functions like an AK-47 in terms of durability, ruggedness & reliability. Basically, something the special forces would use that functions in sand, dirt, mud, snow, & rain. Something that I could depend on. Preferably a pistol with a large magazine capacity, high accuracy and easy to obtain "toys" like suppressors & lasers. My top choice is the H&K USP Tactical because it meets all my requirements. Many US Special Forces also use this weapon. Can you convince me that a 1911 would be better? If so, which one? What about the Sig Sauer P220 .45 Combat? Any other choices? I'm pretty set on the HK, except for the price. I only want the highest quality, the best of the best. So I'm willing to spend a couple grand. But I also want to make a wise "investment."

There is no best. That being said the HK Tactical makes an oustanding platform to mount a suppressor too. The sights are already extra tall to accomodate the supressor. It is from the start an offensive handgun and with mutiple modes of carry, one of them should fit your shooting style. The suppressor makes shooting a breeze, the recoil impulse is slowed down and it feels almost like some kind of big bore .22, fairly quiet, still a lot of movement but none of the harshness when in recoil, and a 230gn .45 acp bowling to it's target. Great fun. Now what do you want? Home defense gun? Good choice, the suppressor will keep your ears in tact, a good light laser combo will help to ID the threat and intimidate it. Concealed carry? Not hardly, unless you are a very large man and fairly out of shape... Any of the major brand names make quality pistols. I for one would recommend the Glock 21SF. You get capacity, but will have to buy a threaded barrel and extended sights. The ole 1911? Yeah it works, but reliabililty issues and the need for tuning hold it back. The guns that Marine Force Recon guys use are highly tuned, use very expensive parts, and require talented armorers to put together. Honestly though any of the major brand names make pistols good enough for use. The HK will take the least additional work to mount a fully useable suppressor too.
  • →What is the ULTIMATE tactical pistol?
    2008-04-03 11:58:34
HK USP, 1911, SIG 220, Glock, other? What is the absolute hands-down ULTIMATE tactical handgun available to civilians?
    Answered By: elChupacabra!
It has got to be a toss-up between the HK USP Tactical and the 1911, depending on what you are going for. The HK USP is an extremely accurate, rugged and dependable handgun, and the Tactical variant, with target sights, threaded barrel and match trigger improve on an incredible pistol to begin with. If you want a tactical pistol in anything other than .45 ACP, this is your best pick. If you care about a large magazine capacity, this is your best pick. If you ever plan on using a suppressor, tactical light or laser, this is your best pick. (Note: The USP Tactical was designed as a smaller version of the Mk23, which is enormous. It does, however, retain all the design characteristics of this hand cannon, yet in a smaller package. That's why I pick the USP Tactical over the Mk23 - plus its about half the price). If, on the other hand, you want a truly classic, high-performance, highly-tuned, single-stack, .45ACP pistol, the 1911 is your gun. Did you know that each Delta Force Operator is given a stipend with which to purchase their own custom-built 1911? Those guys probably shoot more .45ACP than anyone in the world, period, so that says alot to me. It's a toss-up between those two designs, it's all about your preference... but either of those would be head and shoulders above SIG and Glock, or anything else for that matter. Sigs are good but just not in the same class as HK, and Glocks are handguns for people who don't have flush toilets, the AK of pistols if you will. I know alot of people like their Glocks, but it's a whole different ballpark. Compare a Ford to a BMW - that's Glock against HK. In my experience, most Glock advocates - or advocates of any other handgun than HK - have never shot, disassembled, or cleaned an HK. It'll make a believer out of you.
